Energy savings — Determination of energy savings in organizations

This educational training will take you through ISO 50047:2016 (International Organization for Standardization) approaches for the determination of energy savings in organizations. It can be used by all organizations, whether or not they have an energy management system, such as ISO 50001. Energy accounting and avoidance of double-counting are key features of the course. Energy savings calculations forms a foundation for the M&V of energy savings. The calculations also support the IPMVP’s four options of M&V.

    ABOUT INSTRUCTOR
    Ian Byrne, Principal

    Ian Byrne is a Chartered Environmentalist and Chartered Accountant with over 30 years of experience in sustainability including energy efficiency, energy & carbon management and renewables.

    After qualifying as an accountant, Ian worked in finance before leaving to establish a UK NGO, the National Energy Foundation.  While there, Ian set up programs supporting the energy transition, including a national network of 50 Energy Efficiency Advice Centers, also running training courses for centre managers, the Green Energy Supply Certification Scheme and creating the training package for the ASEAN Energy Managers Accreditation Scheme.  In standardization, Ian has been a UK expert on CEN and ISO committees for 15 years.   He was convenor of the International Standard (ISO 50047) on Determination of Energy Savings in Organizations, for which he received the ISO Excellence Award, and co-convened ISO 50009 on Common Energy Management Systems for Multiple Organizations.  Ian is currently convenor for the group writing ISO 14068, Carbon Neutrality and chairs the BSI Shadow Committee on GHG Mitigation and Adaptation. 

    He now runs his own consultancy, IBECCS (Ian Byrne Energy & Carbon Consultancy Services), which identifies practical and cost-effective solutions for mainly smaller organizations to save energy and combat climate change, and undertakes R&D into carbon footprinting and smart local energy systems. Ian is also a Council Member for the Institution of Environmental Sciences and past Treasurer of the UK’s Society for the Environment.
