Data centers are the backbone of the digital economy, supporting everything from cloud services and e-commerce to healthcare and banking. However, their growth has come at a significant environmental and energy cost. Data centers globally consume vast amounts of electricity, much of which is still sourced from fossil fuels, making them a major contributor to emissions. According to McKinsey & Company, a recent analysis of current trends suggests that global demand for data center capacity could rise at an annual rate of between 19% and 22% from 2023 to 2030 to reach an annual energy demand of 171 to 219 gigawatts.
